Kasargode

Kasargode
Kasargod- is the north most district of Kerala. It is bound in the north and east by the state of Karnataka, in the West by the Arabian Sea and in the South by the Kannur District of Kerala. Its headquarters is the port town of Kasargod. The district of Kasargod is of extreme historic importance and boasts of historical architectures which are its tourist attractions. The beautiful beaches and picturesque landscape of the district are breathtaking. Kasaragod District was organised as a separate district on 24 May 1985. It is the northernmost district of Kerala.
Kasargode
Kasaragod lies in the northern tip of the state of Kerala. It has enchanting natural beauty to savor. The total area of Kasaragod is 1,992 sq. km. According to the census of 2001, the total population of Kasaragod is 12,03,342 , out of which 5,87,763 comprises the male population and 6,15,579 the female population. The density of population is 604 per sq km. Kasaragod is the one of the most beautiful districts in Kerala state with 11 rivers (out of a total of 44 rivers in Kerala), forts, beaches, hills and backwaters.

The places of interest are:

Bekal Fort
Bekal Fort Bekal Fort is the biggest fort in Kerala, spreading over 40 acres (160,000 m2). The important features of this fort are the tank with its flight of steps, the tunnel opening towards the south, the magazine for keeping ammunition and the broad and wide steps leading to the Observation Tower which is a rarity. From there one has ample view of towns in the vicinity like Kanhangad, Pallikare, Bekal, Kottikkulam, Uduma etc. This observation centre had strategic significance in finding out even the smallest movements of the enemy and ascertaining safety of the Fort. Bekal Fort is the biggest fort in Kerala which is 14 km from Kanhangad and 11 km from Kasaragod town. The nearest railway station is Pallikere railway station, now Bekal Fort railway station and the nearest airport is Mangalore airport.


Ranipuram
Ranipuram A number of grassy hills near by the Panathady town and linked to Kanhangad by Kanhangad-Panathur state highway. Ranipuram is a hill station located within Kasargod district of Kerala state, south India. It is located about 48 km east of Kanhangad on the Panathoor road branching off at Panathady and lies 750 m (2,461 ft) above sea level adjacent to Bhagamandala forest range. Evidence of pre-settlement traditions exist in the form of 'Theyyam', a folk dance to please the mother goddess held in the month of May. This place was formerly known as Madathumala until the 1970s, when it was purchased by the Catholic Diocese of Kottayam for the purpose of settlement. Settlers renamed it as Ranipuram in memory of the virgin mother.


Kottencheri hills
Kottencheri hills Kottancheri Hills is a part of the Western Ghats in Kasaragod district of Kerala, south India. This is an area of rain forest near Konnakkad 30 km north- east of Kanhangad. It includes a picnic centre and is ideal for trekking. Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri mountain range of Kodagu is nearby.The Kottancherry wildlife sanctuary is an extension of Ranipuram wildlife sanctuary. The Forests of Kottancherry is teeming with wildlife and merges with reserved forests of kasaragod.Wild elephants, wild dogs, deer, wildpigs, rare birds, butterflies are seen here. Heavy hunting of wild animals for meat reported from kerala side border of this reserve forest.It is also a trekkers paradise.


Ajanoor
Ajanoor Ajanoor is a small village in Kasargode district of Kerala state, India. Ajanur became a panjayat after independence and Sri. P.Krishnan Nair (Popular as the "President Krishnan Nair") served as the first president of the panjayat for many years. The famous Madiyan Kulom temple is situated in Ajanur village. It is about 5 km. from Kanhangad, the headquarters of Hosdurg taluk. Ajanur became a panjayat after independence and Sri. P.Krishnan Nair(Popular as the "President Krishnan Nair" who is younger brother of Mahakavi P.Kunhiraman Nair served as the first president as well as president for many consecutive years The main deity of the temple is Bhadrakali; but there are also other deities like Kshetrapalan, Bhagavathi and Bhairavan. A peculiarity of this temple is that a Brahmin priest performs pooja only in the noon, while the morning and evening poojas are performed by a sect called Maniyanis. The festivals in the temple fall during the months of Edavam (May, June) and Dhanu (December, January) and on these days all the poojas are performed in connection with this festival.


Ananthapura Lake Temple
Ananthapura Lake Temple Ananthapura Lake Temple is a Hindu temple located in the middle of a lake in the Kasargod District of Kerala, South India, 5 km from Kumbala. This is the only lake temple in Kerala and the original seat (Moolasthana) of Ananthapadmanabha Swami (Padmanabhaswamy temple) Thiruvananthapuram. Legend has it that this is the original site where Ananthapadmanabha settled down. The temple's lake is also home to a crocodile, which is supposed to be the guard of the temple. When one dies, another mysteriously takes its place. Kumbala can easily be reached from Mangalore or from Kannur via a number of bus routes, as well as by train and taxi.


Chandragiri Fort
Chandragiri Fort Chandragiri Fort built in the 17th [century] is in Kasargod District of Kerala, south India.This large squarish fort is 150 feet (46 m) above sea level and occupies an area of about seven acres by the side of the river Payaswini. The fort is now in ruins.The fort has an eventful history behind it.In earlier days, the river was considered to be the border of two powerful kingdoms - Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When Thulunadu was captured by the Vijayanagara Empire, the Kolathunadu kings lost the Chandragiri region to them. During the decline of the Vijayanagara empire the area was administratively looked after by the Keladi Nayakas of Ikkeri. When the Vijayanagara empire fell in the 16th century, Vengappa Nayaka declared independence. Later Shivappa Nayaka took over the reins. He built a chain of forts of which Chandragiri is part. Chandragiri Fort offers a breathtaking view of the river and the Arabian Sea.


Kanwatheertha Beach Resort
Kanwatheertha Beach Resort Kanwatheertha Beach Resort is one of many beach resorts in the Kasargod district of Kerala state, South India. It is 3 km north of Manjeshwar, has a large swimming pool lake, and a beach of 4 km. length. The swimming pool is formed by sea water in the neat vast beach is one of the gifts of nature.


Trikkanad and Pandyan Kallu
Trikkanad and Pandyan Kallu The historical significant Pandiyan Kallu is a rock rising above the sea, located 2kms from the famous Trikkanad Temple. Legend says that one of the Pandya King tried to attack the temple through the sea, but their ship was burnt by Lord Shiva. The burnt ship was then turned into a rock and later it came to be known as Pandiyan Kallu. It is a quite challenging and favourite destination of adventurous swimmers.
