Kollam

Kollam
Kollam -The Kollam town (erstwhile Quilon) is the headquarters of the Kollam district. It is an old sea port and the district?s highlight is its commercial trade with China and other countries since historical times. The district is bound by Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta on the North and Thiruvananthapuram on the South. Kollam is located in the the South west coast of kerala. It is an old sea port of the Arabian sea coast. Kollam occupies an area of 2,491 sq. km.

According to the census of 2001, the total population of the district is 25,84,118 with the population density of 1037 people per square kilometer.Agriculture is the primary source of income in Kollam other than various industries of the region. Paddy, coconut, tapioca, rubber, pepper, mango, banana and cashew are grown here. Kollam was formerly called "Desinganadu" and even before its was known as Tarsish(Koreki ni-(sea pointed inland or a creek)kollam). Later during the rule of the Travancore kingdom in southern Kerala, Kollam was the focal point of trade. The start of the Malayalam era (ME) is associated with Kollam. The ME is also referred as Kollavarsham.

Munroe Island
Munroe Island Munroe Island is found at the confluence of Ashtamudi Kayal and the Kallada River, in India, is one of the most picturesque village of Kerala. The serene place is named in memory of Resident late Colonel John Munro of the erstwhile Princely state of Travancore. This island is surrounded by Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake. It is also known as Munroothuruthu, Manrothuruthu and Munroethuruth. it is situated at a distance of 25 km from Kollam by road. It is 71 km by road from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) air port. The place is surrounded by Kallada River & Lake Ashtamudi and is accessible by road, rail and Inland water navigation. The Island village is a tourism friendly village where you can watch Coir retting process, Coir Weaving, Fishing, Prawns Feeding, Migratory Bird Watch, Narrow canals and Water ways, Coconut farms on the lake shore, Lagoons, Kandal plants and the beautiful Tiny Islands of PATHUPARA. In this group of islands PATHUPARA is a tiny island of 2 acres (8,100 m2) of land surrounded by Kallada river connected to Ashtamudi lake. On this Island there is a village house with all facilities for stay for family or groups, but prefer families. You can stay there for number of days you like and can Enjoy village life. This is a serene place for artists and writers, they can refresh their mind and make classics.


Kollam Town
Kollam Town Kollam district, earlier known as Quilon district, is one among the 14 districts of Kerala state, India. The district is representative of all the natural attributes of Kerala and is endowed with a long coastal region, a major sea port on the Arabian Sea inland in Astamudi lake and was called Tarsish. Plains, mountains, lakes, lagoons and Kerala Backwaters, forests, farm land and rivers. The area had mercantile relationship with Phoenicians and the Romans About thirty percent[dubious – discuss] of this district is covered by the Ashtamudi Lake, thereby making it a gateway to the Kerala Backwaters. Chavara
Chavara Chavara is approximately 14 km north of Kollam on the Kollam-Alappuzha highway in India. Tonnes of mineral sand, mainly titanium, are exported from Chavara to various countries. The Kovilthottam port is situated within the limits of Chavara Panchayat. Kovilthottam is a strip of land (approx.100 mts in width) sandwiched in between chavara T.S canal and Arabian sea. It is also a tourist spot and pilgrim centre. St. Andrews church, beach and lighthouse are major attractions.


Oachira
Oachira Oachira or Ochira is a small town in Kollam district in Kerala, India. It is one of the famous sacred places of Kerala and in India. Oachira is on the border of Kollam and Allappuzha Districts, next to the National Highway 47. It is a very ancient pilgrimage center that is centered on the ParaBrahma Temple (that is dedicated to the Para Brahman (or Param Brahman) or OHMKARAM, the Universal Consciousness), which covers thirty-six acres of land.


Thenmala
Thenmala Thenmala is a tourist place near Punalur town, Kollam district in Kerala. The first eco tourism project in India is located at Thenmala. The Thenmala dam was built across Kallada River. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies.Thenmala attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a host of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain. Thenmala is approachable both from Trivandrum and Punalur by road. The waterfall called Palaruvi is a prime attraction nearby. Also nearby is a deer rehabilitation center where visitors can see deer in a forest setting and have a peep into a traditional tree house used by forest dwellers to escape harm from wild animals. Other places near Thenmala are Kulathupuzha, Anchal, Punalur, Kamukumchery and Shenkottah in Tirunelveli district(Tamil Nadu). Themala is 72 km from Thiruvanathapuram and 16 km from Palaruvi Falls.


Kundara
Kundara Kundara is a place located in Kollam district of Kerala, India. It was previously known as the industrial center of Kollam district and housed many heavy industries like KEL, Kerala Ceramics, Aluminium Industries Ltd. (Alind), Laskmi Starch company etc., but apart from the ailing Kerala Ceramics all others are closed. It is also famous for Kundara Proclamation made by Velu Thampi Dalawa in 11 January 1809 [This date is disputed] urging the people to fight the British. Kanjiracodu fraction of the Astamudi lake is near to Kundara. Green chromide, a tasty fish is found in this part of the lake.
